marker for former confederate pow

A marker dedication will be held for private Michael Spence of Captain Parker's Virginia Light Artillery at 2:00pm at Greenlawn Cemetery located in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday Septemeber 12th. Both Spence and John H. Hewitt another member of the above organization were living in Columbus, Ohio at the turn of the century. Former Private Michael Spence would become a citizen of Columbus and would become a meat butcher. Former Private John H. Hewitt would become a rather important member of relgion in the Ohio and Pennsylvania area and would pass away in PA. Rev. Hewitt has been credited with noting the names of the Confederate dead at Johnson's Island after the War.

Spence like many Confederates was captured for a short time near the end of the War and spent a brief time as a POW.

Former private Spence had planned on attending the 50th Gettysburg reunion in 1913 however the state of Ohio refused all former Confederates transporation to the reunion on their nickel. Even the former Ohio soldiers found this measure in bad taste. Due to mounting medical bills and sickness, Mr. Spence died shortly after the Gettysburg reunion and was buried without a marker at the Greenlawn Cemetery. This will be corrected this coming Saturday.
