Hello Judith, it's getting to be a habit. LOL

Your ancestors were sure in a crack unit. I just finished reading about the 6th Kansas Cavalry. What a detailed and tremenous history that regiment had. I would encourge you by using google using quote marks enter "6th Kansas Cavalry" and hit the first site. It is pure speculation where they may have been captured at however, 21 soldiers of Company H were taken prisoner on July 29, 1864 at the engagement of Muzzard Prairie near Fort Smith, Arkansas. Also taken from this site is the following:

"About the 5th of June the battalion was ordered to proceed to Du Vall's Bluff, Arkansas, where It was joined by the prisoners of war on the 14th of the same month, who were, upon their arrival mustered out of service"

The 5th of June referred to above is June of 1865.

Since, Camp Ford was closer to Fort Smith than Camp Cahaba which was near Selma, Alabama I would favor Ford as their prison site, however that is if they were captured at Muzzard Prairie? I seem to recall that Camp Cahaba was pretty much cleared out by May 1865 as was Andersonville in Georgia.

At any rate we will see for sure in Washington, DC
