Mankind will almost always return to their baser behavior when their existence is threatened. But, As you point out the Guards at Andersonville got the same rations as their prisoners. That can not be said of the Federal Guards at Camp Douglas, or Belle Isle or Johnson Island, or other federal Military prisons.

It is one thing when you don't have any better or enough to give your prisoners, as in the case of Andersonville. But, when you do have an abundant supply and withhold the proper supplies, where is the fault then?

Just one example. The North had Morphine and Opium. The South made their narcotics and pain killers out of Garden Lettuce. Who do you think had the medical supplys to give to Prisoners of War?
