Re: Going Home - Discharges from Fort Delaware

Great post, Hugh. My Great Uncle Alexander Boring, 4th Sgt., Co. A, 18th Georgia Infantry, was not released on the 16th of June, 1865, as shown by your timeline. His release was June 24, 1865, from Pt. Lookout, according to his service record. He was captured at Cedar Creek, Octber 19, 1864. Family tradition holds that he walked home. Given your post, he should have rode the train to Kennesaw, Cobb County, Ga., his home.

My other great uncle, Francis, was captured at Roswell, Ga., July 9, 1864, while on recuperative leave from a minie ball through his shoulder and out near his spine. This wound was suffered May 8th or 9th at Spotsylvania. Wofford's Brigade, with the 18th Ga., was just west of the horseshoe. He was sent to Camp Douglas, and suffered from rheumatism from his winter there. He was released June 16, 1865, and also supposedly walked home. Is there a similar timeline for Camp Douglas? Thanks. Stan
