Thanks for your informative reply and offer.

William does not appear in the Fort Delaware Society database, a member kindly looked into this for me a few years ago. Following this I looked at the CMSRs of those captured with him. Those who have records of being incarcerated at Fort delaware have a footnote which states "Incomplete duplicate roll shows that the men whose names are borne on this roll were received at Fort Columbus, N.Y.H. July 6, 1862, from Gen. McClellan's Army," Which would explain why William's name is not on the Fort Delaware database and as no further Cards in his CMSRs after being forwarded to Fort Columbus, July 3, 1862.

I suspect if William had taken the Oath of Allegiance on August 10, 1862, a record of this would be in his CMSR. Also William survived the war and was exempted from returning to duty.

Would both sides have kept a list of soldiers paroled on August 5, 1862, or was there a different procedure of identifying these men when the CMSRs where administered ?
