Re: Early War Galvanized Yankees

Hi Bryan:

Yes. That was in July of 1863. David Price, who is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Fort Delaware Society has made an extensive study of this company, and continues to develop information about them. Ahl's Battery was organized in July 1863 and mustered out on 25 JUL 1865 at Fort Delaware.

In the summer of 1863, the 1st Connecticut Cavalry, the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, and the 3rd Maryland Cavalry were allowed to recruit the Confederate prison pen at Fort Delaware. All of the "galvanized Yankees" spread throughout the 1st Connecticut Cavalry regiment were later consolidated into Company G which was detached and sent to Minnesota just before Grant's spring campaign began in 1864. Eventually this unit was designated as the 1st U. S. Volunteer Independent Company and recognized as such for the balance of its career. They were never part of the 1st U. S. Volunteers regiment formed at Point Lookout in 1864. Battery M, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery supplied a number of ex-Confederates to the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry formed at Fort Monroe in April 1864. The 3rd Maryland Cavalry took away four full companies of ex-Confederates from Fort Delaware in September 1863.
