Alan does great work!

City Point was Grant's supply base (the Cam Ranh Bay of the American Civil War) where the Petersburg captives would have been collected and dispersed by steamship to Hart's Island and other locations including Fort Delaware. FHH was released under General Orders No. 109 issued by the War Department on June 6, 1865. FHH would have taken the Oath of Allegiance first, and then had the option to take the Johnson Amnesty Oath. He would have been provided government transportation by water and by rail to a point nearest his home from New York.

Are there any family accounts of his trip home?
