Our old thread on POWs at Missionary Ridge was getting pretty long -- thought this topic might catch some more info from knowledgeable posters here about Galvanized Yankees -- Confederates that were taken north as POWs and around the end of 1864, offered a chance at freedom if they would fight Indians on the frontier, guard mail routes, etc. About 6,000 took the offer.
