Descriptive lists of prisoners, 1862-1865. Records relating to Confederates in Union hospitals, 1861-1865. Hospital registers, 1864-1865. Ledgers of prisoners' accounts, 1862-1865. Cash books, 1863-1865. Mess books, 1862-1863. Records of articles received for and delivered to prisoners, 1864-1865. Stubs, receipts, and records of prisoners' money received, 1862-1865.

A significant point to be made is that much of the data in these records is what was extracted and a card was made when it pertained to a particular prisoner and included in his Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR).

Much of the correspondence of the agents of exchange are in the Official Records, series 2, volumes 4-8.

Mr. Simmons (contributor on this message board) may be able to help you if those records still exists and where they exist. Your soldier's CMSR should have a card indicating if he was exchanged and where. It will also indicate where the source of the information came from.
