Re: Arkansas Post, & James J Shoemaker

And how about Ambrose? According to our records, he was discharged from the Fort Delaware hospital on 8 JUN 1865. He would have been released from Fort Delaware a few days later upon taking the taking the Oath. Did Ambrose also arrive at Fort Delaware 29 MAR 1864? When was he released from Fort Delaware?

I would like to have the same details for him for our archives that you provided for Asbury. Asbury was released under a special exchange of prisoners agreed to in February 1865. Most of the men released under that special exchange agreement were too sick to return to duty right away and that was the case with Asbury as his subsequent Richmond hospital record and furlough indicates.

Relative to Ambrose M. and James J. SHOEMAKER/SHUMAKER serving in Hart's Battery, there appear to be separate CMSRs for these two men for service in Hart's Battery, Arkansas Light Artillery. You need to acquire a copy of these CMSRs to see what information might be available about these two.

Don't try to force fit James into the 37th Arkansas Infantry. He may not have joined that unit as Brian has suggested. See what the CMSR says about his transfers, etc., following his capture at Helena, Arkansas on 4 JUL 1864. His name did not appear in the transfer records for Fort Delaware.
