Thanks again. The lead on Robert with the 101st Il. sounds logical as it would seem someone of rank would have been necessary to help Gauley. The family story is that he was stricken with smallpox in Camp Douglas and that Robert got and Indian medicine man to treat him. Anyway I plan a trip to the library this week to try to check the MSR of that Robert. Robert was about the same age as Gauley, so if he is the relative, he would have been a cousin and not a half brother. Gauley was born in 1828.
