Thanks for all the info. I'm not sure where Gauley was taken prisoner. but know that he was incarcerated at camp Douglas. He was as you said in the 33rd Alabama infantry. His father John R , we think left " up north" and the only verified location we have for him is in Chatham co Ga, where he married a widow Saunders in 1823. We conjecture that maybe he left a family, or wife and children " up north" and that Robert was part of that family. Is there any way we can trace any of the Roberts that you listed as to who their parents were? Thanks a bunch for your help.
