Re: CSA POW's at Louisville, KY

Susan:

I have a 1984 reprint copy of the "Register of Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Who Died in Federal Prisons and Military Hospitals in the North" (U. S. War Department, 1912). The listing for Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery shows a Richard McDONALD, Private, Company B, 29th Mississippi Infantry who died at Camp Chase on March 18, 1865. Only three other names come close: Private A. W. McDaniel, Co. A, 5th Alabama Cavalry (died December 7, 1864), Private J. L. McDaniel, Co. A, 38th Tennessee Infantry (died January 26, 1865), and Private R. A. McDONALD, Co. B, 5th Alabama Cavalry (died January 30, 1865).

I would seriously encourage you not to rely entirely upon what you find listed in ancestry.com. My experience has been that much of the information is garbled due to transcription errors and misinterpretation errors on the part of their transcribers.

I did a quick check of the National Park Service's online Index to the Compiled Military Service Records and found that there is a CMSR listed for Private Richard A. McDANIEL who was enrolled in Company B, 39th Mississippi Infantry. There was no "Richard McDONALD, Co. B, 29th Mississippi Infantry" listed in the NPS Index, so I might be inclined to suggest that Richard McDONALD named in 1912 War Department "Register" is really your Richard A. McDaniel. You need to obtain a copy of his Compiled Military Service Records to sort out the answers.

Hope all of this is of some help!

Hugh
