Re: Escaped Confederate

Interestingly enough, we have an entry in the Fort Delaware Society database for Private George SIZEMORE, Co. I, 61st Virginia Infantry who was captured at Hagerstown, Maryland on 30 JUN 1863, sent to Fort Delaware, and retained there until 11 MAY 1865 when he was released upon taking the Oath of Allegiance.

We also have a similar entry for Private G. SIZEMORE, Co, I, 61st Georgia Infantry. He was in the Fort Delaware hospital on 7 FEB 1864. No further information was noted.

I checked the National Park Services' Index to the CMSR. They have no George SIZEMORE in the 61st Virginia, but do confirm a record for Private George SIZEMORE in the 61st Georgia Infantry. It could be that Society researchers misread "VA" for "GA" and these entries should be consolidated into one.

The NPS Index lists a Private George W. SIZEMORE in Co. D, 46th Georgia Infantry. And there were three men named "G. W. SIZEMORE" enrolled in the 15th Confederate Cavalry (from Mobile, Alabama), the 16th Arkansas Infantry, and the 34th North Carolina Infantry. None of these "name and regiment" combinations appear in our Society database.

Unfortunately, the Index to the CMSR doesn't tell us what is in these records. Since Leslie's story about trading places with another POW in the hospital took place at Point Lookout in May 1864, perhaps he wasn't George Washington SIZEMORE.

Keep us posted on what you learn!
