The Civil War Prisons Message Board

Re: Alton POWs exchanged @ City Point ??

Hi Beth:

You asked: >>> now is, is there any listings of unknown soldiers names anywhere? <<<

Want to rephrase this? They wouldn't be "unknown" if they were on a list somewhere. I am not aware of any list of Confederate dead whose burial places are unknown, but somebody who reads this board may have compiled one. You certainly have two of the names in Richard and Adam STALNECKER.

You asked about a list for Alton Military Prison: See http://www.altonweb.com/history/civilwar/confed/index.html

I have a copy of the 1912 War Department "Register" of Confederate POWs buried in northern prison and hospital cemeteries. I found the following names that might interest you:

Camp Chase (Ohio) Confederate Cemetery:
Private Robert P. W. STALNAKER, Co. A, 46th Alabama Infantry died 27 MAR 1865.

Woodlawn National Cemetery (Elmira, New York):
Private B. F. STALNECKED, Co. H, 7th North Carolina Infantry died 7 OCT 1864.

Point Lookout (Maryland) Confederate Cemetery:
Private R. STALNAKER, Co. H, 7th South Carolina Infantry died 4 JUN 1864.

Nothing else came close, especially in the Alton Military Prison cemetery list contained in the 1912 War Department "Register".

There is no substitute for getting a copy of the Compiled Military Service Records for Richard and Adam. You can purchase copies through the National Archives at http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/military/civil-war/index.html#confed or through the Military Records Research Service (top of this page) that supports this Civil War Message Board.

Good luck with your search!

Hugh
