I am certainly looking forward to the published journal of lieutenant William C. Whittle, jr., who served on the CSS SHENANDOAH, to be released next month, by the University of Alabama press.
These primary accounts are usually gems in the crown of CS Navy research, though the editors of such works tend to omit passages or other bits of data which they consider as unimportant. The deck log of the CSS SHENANDOAH, included in the ORN volumes, omitted some data, which I was able to extract from copies of the originals, and which included information relevant to my own studies. Additionally, the journal of paymaster Douglas French Forrest, of the CSS RAPPAHANNOCK, published in 1979, also omitted some passages, as indicated by the editor of the work.
Hopefully the Whittle journal will not omit anything whatsoever, as every little bit counts.
