In Response To: C.S.N. at Selma? ()

Ethan, I do stand corrected on this one, as my previous thoughts were that there were no enlisted personnel of the CSN at Selma.

I checked a volume titled: "The Confederacy: A Guide to the Archives of the Government of the Confederate States of America," by Henry Putney Beers, and issued by the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C., 1968, but revised in 1986, and which includes the information that there certainly was a Selma Naval Station, as well as the Selma Naval Gun Foundry and Ordnance Works. There exists records for the foundry itself, but, unfortunately, the Naval Station records seem to be missing. However, there is an article on this in the Alabama Review volume 15, pages 30-36, of January, 1962, by William N. Still, jr., titled "Selma and the Confederate States Navy," so this might provide further data. There may have indeed been enlisted sailors based at the station, and this certainly requires further research.

The commandant of this Naval station is stated to have been Ebhenezer Farrand.
