American Sailor on Pitcairn Island, 1864.

With all the news lately about the incidents on Pitcairn Island (situated halfway between New Zealand and South America), I note that one of the families on the island is descended from an American sailor, Samuel Warren, who settled there in 1864.
Does anyone have any further data on this? Was he a Union Navy sailor, or was he from the merchant service? If Union Navy, which vessel was he from? Anything further would be most appreciated.
This also reminds me of the data that was promised to me, many years ago, from a friend of my wife's, a Mormon missionary, who had been on a mission to one of the other islands of the Pacific, and had come across the marked grave of a Civil War soldier or sailor buried there. She indicated that she had taken a photo of the grave, but, some one or two decades later, I am still waiting for this photo. I think this lady has now passed on, unfortunately.
