My wife's ancestor, John Jeffereson Gaither, was originally in the 22nd Alabama Infantry but was discharged in 1862 due to some sickness (he wound up dying of Bright's Desease). Not to be denied the honor of serving his country and his cause, he enlisted into the Navy and spent the rest of the war stationed at the Mobile Navy Yards. He was paroled there in 1865 and went home. Is there anyway to find out what his actual job was at the Navy Yard, inspector, carpenter, ironworker, supply clerk, or what?
