On July 16,1861 the Waring steward a free black named William Tillman with the help of a Waring seaman retook the ship in the process killing Amiel; stevens and Liddy . The other two were spared to sail the Waring to New York City. {Tilliman motovation was that he realized that when the vessel reached Charleston he would be sold into slavery despite the fact he had been born free}
