Contact the National Archives about his Pension Records, if any. Also, check out the volumes of the 1863 and 1864 Navy Registers, as they should include details of his appointment date, place, state of birth, etc.
I have a copy of the 1865 Navy Register, but by then he had already resigned, so the only information included in this volume is the date of his resignation.
Additionally, deck logs of the vessels he served on would usually mention his arrival aboard, and departure, etc. Sometimes, if he was a bit of a troublemaker, his felonous activities would be mentioned, and any punishments involved, as was the case with many of the enlisted personnel.
There are numerous records one could check, and much of this involves a substantial outlay, but this would usually be worth it.
