Callahan's LIST OF OFFICERS OF THE U.S. NAVY shows James L. Smith was appointed acting first assistant engineer on October 1, 1862, and resigned on May 31, 1864.
ORN Series 1, volume 22, page 551, shows that he had also served as second assistant engineer on the gunboat ST. LOUIS, February, 1862. There is an inconsistency here, somewhere.
