(The USS Merrimac was salvaged by the CSA and became the CSS Virginia. It is presumed that Thad was a Seaman with the U.S. Navy until the Civil War, then, like so many Virginians, he fought for the Confederacy.

Bedford City Virginia Newspaper articles, one dated June 29, 1911, titled "ON THE MERRIMAC Survivor of Famous Crew Dies at His Home Here" and the other dated March 9, 1987, titled "Bedford man fought in historic naval battle" and is written by Kenneth E. Crouch. Both articles reference Thaddeus Wilford.
