It is rather amazing how many serving and former personnel of the Royal Navy entered into Confederate service, even amongst the blockade runners (as your message indicates).
During my research on the personnel of the Confederate States Navy and the Marine Corps, I have found much additional data from some rather obscure sources, which includes the fact that many of the sailors from England, who served aboard the Confederate cruisers, had either previously served in the Royal Naval Reserve, or were still serving members (some of these latter sailors obviously used assumed names, but those who did not, and were found out, were later dismissed from the RN).
The perfect example is, of course, the CSS ALABAMA, which included quite a number of RN personnel. However, I have also found a large number who were on the CSS GEORGIA (the cruiser), CSS RAPPAHANNOCK, CSS SHENANDOAH, etc.
The study of the personnel of the Confederate cruisers is a whole new and exciting area of research, which is yielding much valuable information to my database.
A recent discovery is the gravesite, in the town of Echuca, state of Victoria, Australia, of carpenter Edward Redmore Heald, who had served on the CSS RAPPAHANNOCK. We are now trying to obtain a marker for his unmarked grave, as well as a Southern Cross of Honor. Hopefully the SCV will back us all the way on this one, as we intend to garner some publicity in some of the local newspapers, and perhaps the Civil War News, as well.
