Re: CIvillian boats Converted into Gunboats!

The cruiser CSS NASHVILLE was previously a passenger steamer, running between New York and Charleston. There were several others which I cannot recall off the top of my head.
In the Union Navy there were several ex-New York ferry boats later used as gunboats, amongst other, mostly on the James River and on the waterways of North Carolina. These included the USS COMMODORE BARNEY, COMMODORE HULL, COMMODORE JONES (which was sunk by a mine on the James River, May 6, 1864), and the HUNCHBACK.
USS MORSE was engaged at Roanoke Island and Elizabeth City, North Carolina, February, 1862, New Bern, NC, March, 1862, and expeditions on the York River, May, 1862, Pamunkey River, June, 1863 and March, 1864, and the Rappahannock River in 1865. More details can be obtained from several volumes, especially the DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN NAVAL FIGHTING SHIPS, and Paul Silverstone's WARSHIPS OF THE CIVIL WAR NAVIES.
