Salt Shipments

In a letter to Hindman from Copper I.T. Dec 18,1862-1st Bridage he orders Col. Watie
to destroy all the salt kettles-via Grand river near Ft Gibson a Captain Lennex was in charge so to speak was he a boat capt?.

Each kettle was abt 1500 lbs iron abt 6ft across face-very large bulky & heavy they were used to boil salt out of the water--50-60 per mine?Grand Saline, Bryan's,Alberty's and some smaller ones---
The union came in July 1862-so this letter maybe a after the fact/clean up report.
However all the kettles are gone.

Question;(1) How was salt shipped by barge?

(2)-Could they put these kettles on barges on the river, and sink it in -deep water??

note, it was almost impossible to think with poor horses etc, that this could be done by land.
