Whittle, William Conway
Born 21 January 1806 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Appointed midshipman, USN, 10 May 1820. Promoted lieutenant, 17 May 1828, and to commander, 4 August 1850. Resigned, 20 April 1861.
Captain, Virginia Navy.
Appointed captain, CSN, from Virginia, 11 June 1861, to rank from 26 March 1861. Re-appointed captain (for the war), 23 October 1862, to rank from 8 February 1862. Commanding West Point batteries. Commanding officer in York River, June 1861-1862. Under orders to New Orleans, 11 February 1862. Commanding the Confederate flotilla on the upper Mississippi River and the naval Station at New Orleans, 29 March-April 1862. Commanding Jackson Naval Station, 1862. Richmond Naval Station, 1863. Waiting orders, 1863-1864.
Died in Bent Mountain, Virginia, 8 March 1880.
