Apparently her hull was finishing, receiving wood on the frame. The engines were finished, but Cmdr. McBride took those, together with those for the Arkansas, with him when he went up the Yazoo. Apparently the plan was for Primus Emerson to finish the Tennessee's hull (if possible) and have it towed down to Yazoo City as well. Just in case that couldn't be done in time, McBride made arrangements to have what was completed burned. There was about five weeks between the time the Arkansas left Fort Pickering for down the river and the time Memphis was lost so, depending upon where the construction on the Tennessee was when she left, there might have been a chance that she could have been launched and towed out.
