Re: Navy Fuses
In Response To: Navy Fuses ()

As part of my Navy Artillery Collection I have obtained a 1863 Navy Water Cap Fuse. Was this fuse used in all Navy projectiles? Did they also use The Pewter fuse in Parrott rounds? Did the Navy use the same Frankfort Arsenal Fuse packs that the Army did?

I'll answer those parts of your enquiry I can. Fuzes for the 13" Seacoast Mortar shell were wooden plug construction, the same issued to both land and waterborne weaponry. Fuzes for the Mortars came from Frankford and the Washington Navy Yard. For a definitive text that would answer those questions of identity find a copy of Thomas' and Dickey's book on ordnance. Two versions of this text were printed, the latter more comprehensive. Hank

Josiah Gorgas on the military life, June 3, 1860.:

"I continually fancy how happy I could be with a spot of earth which I could call my own, which I could plant and improve; the same things would constantly be about me; where I could live and die, and where some of my children might live and die after me." Gorgas left the service of the United States on March 21, 1861 at the behest of General P.G.T. Beauregard. Gorga resigned from his post as commandant of Frankford Arsenal, his letter being accepted by the Lincoln government on April 2. The next day Gorgas left with his family for Charleston, S.C.
