I am starting a collection of Navy Cap Tallies for Civil War Ships that served past 1865. My understanding is that during the Civil War the ships name was hand lettered on the flat cap. Later Tallies appear to be gold painted on and also gold stitched on a separate ribbon. I have one that is Gold Painted for the USS Roanoke which I believe to be just post Civil War to perhaps Spanish American War. I have seen some that are gold stitched. Are they more likely World War 1 vintage? If anyone has any for sale please let me know. I have been searching for the USS Montauk. Thanks! Doug
