Captain William Mason Post (born December 10, 1823/1810, [Saybrook Twp., Middlesex] Essex, Connecticut; died December 3, 1915, Fort Collins, Colorado) ac At the age of thirteen, William went to sea as a cabin boy. From 1861-1864, William was master and executive officer of the store ship "Relief" and the gunboat "Sonoma" in the Union's North Atlantic flying squadron. Post was elected alderman when the town was made a city of the second class. In 1880, the family moved to town so their daughter could attend the agricultural college.
