David, I neglected to add that I am very, very particular about accepting everyone who claimed service in the Civil War, as being genuine, without any proper documentation or proof. If I did, we would probably have millions more personnel on our lists than we currently have now. Having gone through hundreds, perhaps thousands of pension document pages, during the past decade or more, I have found numerous claims made for the pension, by soldiers and sailors, some of whom were obvious frauds. Many of these were caught out, and their applications denied altogether, thankfully. Even without relying on pension applications, we have had numerous claims of persons who were supposed to have served in the Civil War, yet, on further research we have found them to be obvious frauds, who had never served. That is why our research consists of first trying to show some form of authentic evidence that a person had indeed served, in the Army or Navy, both Union and Confederate, before we go further, and start checking any additional facts. Sometimes descendants tend to make these claims, and not the individual concerned, as in the case of two brothers, who are buried in Western Australia. One even had some medals that were supposed to have been awarded to him, for his Civil War service, yet, just a quick look at these medals would have shown anyone that they were poor quality fakes, with the dates of battles shown incorrectly, and even one with the name of a battle spelt incorrectly. Even the National Archives, in a letter dated in 1984, confirmed that these were fakes, and no such similar medals were ever issued. Even the discharge certificates were confirmed by the NA as fakes. The final nail in the coffin was an article I found, in a West Australian newspaper, dated in the 1880's, in which that particular person, in a court of law, confirmed that he had never been a soldier at any time.
What I am trying to say is that, without any proper documentation (let alone fakes), I prefer not to include a soldier's or sailor's name in my lists, especially if these lists are compiled from original and authentic documentation that do not show a person's name at all. This would prevent egg on my face, if, at a later stage, it is found that no such person ever served in the Civil War.
In the past fifteen months or so, I have been able to reject some two to three dozen names of soldiers or sailors who were claimed to have been Civil War veterans, after locating evidence to show no service at all, and, in many cases, they had never even set foot on U.S. soil, at any time in their lives.
