Re: Blockade Running Personnel buried in New Zeala

Dear Terry

This is a copy of an email to your email address 'tfoenander@hotmail.com' but it has bounced back to me, & then I noticed this site and found your name

I have just come across your site “U S Civil War Navies” & I was just hoping that there may be something about a Llloyd Jones in the Muster Rolls,
I have a book called “Letters of an Englishman” which was typed by my Great aunt, it is his account of the war from his letter home to his parents. My Great Uncle was a Lloyd Jones born 1838 in Lancashire and I have yet to locate the date between 1863/64 when he crossed the Atlantic to volunteer for the “Union”. Lloyd died on the 18 Sep 1877 and is buried in Norwood Cemetary London.

Chapter 1.

He talks about serving under Admiral Porter.

“Cape Fear River; January 25th 1864 he talks about their bombardment of Fort Fisher & Fort Carswell,…. They then lay off Beaufort. NC for a short time (about 8days) they then set off for Fort Fisher., our ship had 2 killed & three wounded ( No name of his ship at this point) he carries on talking about the war.

We expect orders to return to the James River.

Some letters later he says our ship is cruising in the Chesepeake Bay with the Kansas & the Monticello. The three vessels take it in turn to go to Fort Monre and sometimes to Norfolk for the mail. He goes on to talk about those who were at the taking of Fort Fisher & Wilmington are to receive a 1000$ prize money payable at the time of their discharge and those who joined last July are entitled 300$ bounty.

“Norfolk April 29th. We came in here yesterday after being out in the Chesepeake bay acting as guard ship, We were relieved yesterday by the Tristram Shandy and are now lying in the Elizabeth River coaling.

Next letter is July 4th His old ship the Pequot is out of commission….. and is now on the “Vanderbilt” which cruises with the “Dictator” and then writes from Philadelphia….. Both ships whilst in port the ships were crowded with visitors from 9am to 6pm. He also says Did I tell you that we captured 3 blockade runners and talks about the method of capture.

The Vanderbilt is in the repair yard and then is to leave for San Francisco taking with them the “Monadnock” The Christian Society presented the ship with a library of 250 books……

Navy Yard Philadelphia October 9th Still here, getting ready to go out carries on talking about the work being done……. He talks about his old commander D L Braine.

In the 2nd chapter he tells about the Cruise of the Vanderbilt “Hampton Roads to San Francisco” and in the 3rd chapter he tells of being with the South Pacific Squadron “ To Honolulu with Queen Emma” He states that the ships writer has been in trouble and on the sick list for most of this quarter.

Regards
