Sorry if this is a simplistic question, But I'm trying to get a handle on it and haven't been able to find an answer.

I'm interested in finding out what the rank structure was for Union officers. (I worked 17 years for the navy as a civilian so i'm familiar with the current structure). For example, was there a Commander or Lcdr rank at the time??

One other question - Would or could the helmsman on a Passaic Class ironclad be a quartermaster??
