Re: Steamboats
In Response To: Steamboats ()

Hello,

I have noted a number of transports convoyed by Lt. Cmdr. Fitch in my
biography of the man. These were referenced not only from Gibson, but from
Way; Hunter; the Lytle List; Parson's 1867 report; OR, I, v. 52; and a
number of other sources noted in the bibliography. There is a relatively new
work by Adam Kane, "The Western River Steamboat," that I found helpful. If
you have access to the on-line issues of the New York Times or the Chicago
Tribune for the war, I'd type your query into the search box (being as
specific as you can) and see what comes up. I was constantly amazed at the
level of specificity in some of those contemporary articles. Of course, if
you backdate into the late 1850s (say for steamboat fueling, etc.) you might
obtain even more info. Happy hunting.
