Dennis, as far as I know there were two other United States Navy hospital vessels, besides the RED ROVER, the others being the USS HOME and the USS MARY SANFORD. However, both of these others operated in the SABS, while the RED ROVER was in the area of the Mississippi River. There were also United States Army hospital vessels, but these are a separate chapter altogether.
I don't recall, or have not seen any reference to any United States Navy hospital ship operating in the East Gulf Blockading Squadron. I have also noted that, whenever there was an outbreak of the yellow fever, the vessels were usually placed in quarantine until it cleared. As well there would have been quarantine stations, as well as land based Naval hospitals in several areas, such as Key West, and the one some miles below New Orleans, which name escapes me at the moment. I have a lengthy newspaper description of this last mentioned one, somewhere in my newspaper clippings file, somewhere.
There may be something written about this in the DANFS volumes, as these volumes include some very interesting articles. I will check, and, if anything if found on the subject, I will let you know.
