Re: Lt. Cmdr. Alexander Slidell Mackenzie, Jr.

LCDR Alexander S. Mackenzie was killed in action in Formosa while battling pirates who recently killed the entire crew of a near by American merchant ship. Alexander (Sandy) was killed instantly when a saber pierced between his second and third rib during the battle. His body was recovered after the war with insurgents and wrapped in white linen cloth. He received a tradionial naval burial at sea. There is no grave to visit him at, but if your in Formosa you can visit some park that is dedicated to him, or in the Naval Academy Chapel his name does appear on a memorial plack you can leave flowers at. Alex (Sandy called by friends) is one of those unsung heros you'll never hear about unless you dig for facts.

Thanks,
Laura
