John, have you tried the U.S. Army Military History Institute at Carlisle, Pennsylvania? They hold numerous images of officers and enlisted men, and may have a photo of Calkins. As well, it might pay to contact some of the repositories in Michigan, as his personal effects may have been donated to one of the archives or historical societies in that state, after his death.
You mention that he was an acting paymaster, but Edward Callahan's LIST OF OFFICERS OF THE U.S. NAVY does not include his name, and I feel that he was never commissioned in that rank. I believe that he only remained as a paymaster's clerk before his transfer to the artillery. What is the source of your information to show that he was an acting paymaster? Perhaps he may have been in a temporary position when he was acting paymaster, and reverted to his clerical duties immediately on the return of his paymaster.
