"Simple" as in rough or crude calculation. More basically, calculate an underwater volume for the Monitor and same for the Passaic: Vol = length X width X draft. If one assumes that the underwater hull shape of the Passaic is similar to the Monitor than just multiply the ratio the two volumes Passaic/Monitor times the known tonnage of the Monitor.
