Hello all,
I have heard of a boat called the Autauga that went down with supposedly 600 Union soldiers aboard in the Alabama River. Does anyone know where, and why she went down? Was she the USS or CSS Autauga, or just some commandeered local river-boat named "Autauga"?

Also, does anyone know the full story? Were any saved? Was there a salvage operation done, or did she just break up or rot away?

By the way, "Autauga" is the name of a county here in Alabama across the Alabama River from Montgomery County.
