Montgomery's "Gun Island"?

Hello all,

I sure hope I am not irritating anyone with my onslaught of questions. One more thing: I recently saw an old map of the Alabama river dated 1920, showing all the old bars and islands that are now mostly under water due to the damming and raising of river levels in the 1970s.

Anyway, Montgomery, like Selma, had a string of forts and redoubts all the way around it from one point on the river to a point on the river on the far side of Montgomery. But on the outskirts of Montgomery is a large island covered with vegatation and trees. On this old map from 1920 it refers to that island as "Gun Island". That name makes me wonder if it was fortified to guard the approaches to Montgomery via the river during the Civil War. Not far from that spot is where the CSS Nashville and others were built. Does anyone have any info or ideas about this? Again, just curious. If that was the case, I wonder what might be hidden by that vegatation?
Dave
