William Conway Whittle, Sr. born 1805 in Mecklenburg Co, VA
was a commander USN, resigned his commission in 1861 to serve his home state of Virginia. His son William Conway Whittle, Jr. graduated from the Naval Academy 1853. His part in the "War of Northern Agression" was to serve as his last "deployment" aboard the CSS Shenandoah, first named the Sea King by the builders in Liverpool.
I am proud of my great uncle. I am proud we are part of Virginia history and that of the United States.
If anyone reading this would like to read the military history of the Whittle family, try the US history of the Civil War by looking up the names in the index. Not only the Whittle family, but two generations of Arthur Sinclair family.
If anyone reading this is near the Naval Yard in Washington, DC, look up the history of Commandant Beverley Kennon and during the "War", his son Lieutenant Beverley Kennon.
And a loud unprintable word to the people making money on a name in Virginia and Confederate history!
