The sub, supposedly financed by a wealthy N.O. area plantation owner, as a means to break the Union blockade, was found in 1878 while dredging a canal near New Orleans. Originally thought to be the Pioneer, it is being conserved by the Louisiana State Museum in N.O., to be put on display in Baton Rouge when finished.
Was rumored to be manned by slaves who abandoned it during trials, and fled.
