Other Personnel of the CSS SHENANDOAH.

It should be noted that the affidavit and personnel list of the CSS SHENANDOAH, completed by William A. Temple (who served on the SHENANDOAH under the assumed name of William John Jones) contains a large number of errors in first names, some surnames, and other data included for these personnel. I also recently received copies of the shipping articles of the CSS SHENANDOAH from the Museum of the Confederacy, and have noted these error. I would much rather prefer to rely on the shipping articles, than on the memory of Temple, when he was filling out the affidavit for the U.S. Consul in England. Some errors and their corrections are:

Thomas Swanton's first name was actually William.
Ernest W. Burt's correct name was Ambrose William Burt.
Franklin Gloon's surname was actually Glover (he had tried to enlist on the SHENANDOAH, at Melbourne, a few days before her departure on February 18, but was arrested by the local police and taken to court; freed because he was an American citizen, he was able to get back aboard the cruiser just before her departure, and served as sailmaker's mate)
H.C. Canning was actually George P. Canning (of whom I have recently found quite a bit more data on, in the journal of surgeon Lining - besides his wounding at Shiloh, and other bits and pieces that we already know of).
Thomas McLean's first name was actually James.
Joseph Mullineux's first name was actually Henry.

and several other corrections that I am making, from the shipping articles.
Temple also states that William Bruce, the ward room steward, was a Malay, but the journal of surgeon Lining includes an entry that actually states that Bruce was a "Hindoostanee" from Madras (as was Temple/Jones), "is quite dark, but speaks English perfectly".
It is amazing what facts seem to emerge from first hand accounts, such as journals and letters, and that is why I prefer to use these sources, in my studies.
The carpenter of the SHENANDOAH, O'Shea, was stated by Temple to have been "an Irishman by birth" but now I note that Lining's journal includes an entry stating that O'Shea had been a "politician in some Navy Yard in the U.S."
So there is certainly a whole lot of additional research to be done, in relation to the personnel of the Confederate Navy.
