Would anyone be familiar with the numbering system for US gunboats during the early part of the War?
I have a list of the tinclad numbers, but what I am looking for is a list of the gunboat numbers that were apparently in use before the tinclads came along. I know that USS Itasca was called "gunboat No. 7", and USS Katahdin was No. 8; but I've also seen references during this time period (1862, on the Mississippi River) to "gunboat No. 3", so I would suppose that there is a list somewhere matching names to these numbers.
Any suggestions as to where I might look to find this list?
