Hi,
I am doing research for a novel and need to know how the Navy would have stopped a suspicious vessel on the Mississippi River in May of 1863.

My character is a cotton smuggler bound for Memphis from Chickasaw Bluffs. He has bogus papers making it appear his business is legitimate.
