The mention of the longboats in the above article that were meant for the resupply mission to Ft. Sumter were rerouted through a bit of trickery on the part of Commodore Barron. Barron was an ardent seccesionist and very much a part of the Naval Department that was part of the Federal Government under newly appointed President A. Lincoln.

I find it very interesting that a reporter on the scene knew in some detail of the movements of the shipping to Brazos, whereas the Naval Department probably knew nothing of the rouse until they read the above article.

Barron joinded the Virginia Provisional Navy shortly after this incident as Officer of the Bureau of Orders and Details. He wound up as ranking Confederate Naval Officer in Paris , France. Barron was made a midshipman in the U.S. Navy at the age of four by an act of Congress.
