Does anybody know what color the case mate armor on the CSS Virginia would have been? I have heard various shades of gray, but the Tom Freeman painting Congress Burning shows it as black. This painting can be viewed on the home page of the National Civil War Naval Museum web site. I'm assuming the wooden deck areas would have been a weathered tan color,or perhaps creosoted black.Thanks for any info.Doug
