Re: CSS Alabama confederate money

Semmes was rescued by the British yatcht Deerhound and taken to England. Semmes put all his gold, money, captured chronometers, etc, ashore before going out to meet Kearsage. Kearsage rendered no assistance to the crew of the Alabama until a good bit of time had passed. Most were rescued by the Deerhound and other boats that had come out to watch the battle. Capt. Winslow of the Kearsage protested to the English government that the folks brought to England should be turned over to him. England retorted, hotly, that since most of the crew were British citizens, they would not be turning over anyone. The matter was dropped and Semmes eventually made his way back to the Confederate States.
