Re: possible courtmartial of Walke. Walke had already been in trouble with the Navy over the "Supply" incident off Pensacola in '61 and came off fairly well, with a slap that sent him West. At the time of the Arkansas, he was still perceived as the great hero of Island No. 10 and was an important counsel to the flag officer. On top of that, no matter what Phelps and a few others may have thought of him, Walke was one of the better senior men available. Given the power of the Arkansas and Carondolet's notorious sluggishness, I believe he did well to keep the old turtle from being more seriously damaged. Oh, another point. There was a good deal of fever running in the fleet at that time and I think that might have played some role. Carondolet's logbook suggests many men were ill in that late spring period.
